Rectangle Triangle — Detroit

Curated by Norm Talley, founder of Upstairs Asylum Recordings

One of the foundation DJs of Detroit's deep house scene since 1982, and an early understudy of the late Ken Collier, Norm has spent four decades sculpting the city's deeper end — a sound built on funk, Motown, soul and disco. Everything here is pulled from that same forty-year ear.

About Norm Talley

A fixture of Detroit's deep end since 1982, mentored early by the late Ken Collier. Around 2000 he formed Detroit Beatdown with Delano Smith and Mike "Agent X" Clark — the trio whose slowed-down, low-slung take on house toured worldwide and held residencies at home and abroad.

His records run through Third Ear, Sushitech, Mixmode, Landed, Dockside and Thema, and in 2017 Omar-S's FXHE released his first album, Norm-A-Lize. Travelin', Powder and Join Hands are underground standards.

Upstairs Asylum ran as his production outfit from 1996 before he turned it into a vinyl label — releases alongside Moodymann, Omar-S and Delano Smith among them. The worldwide vinyl distribution he started in the pandemic is where this stock comes from. He currently co-leads TAG with Scott Grooves and plays main support for Omar-S.
