The label was formed in order to showcase more 'commercial' artists than CTI, with a focus on R&B jazz and blues-oriented jazz music.

The label became inactive around 1979, was revived again in 1983 with [r=1477465 from [a236212, again in 1993 with the soundtrack [m=810347, and finally with the acid-jazz project [r=7353215 in 1996. Many of the label's titles remained in print in Japan with the [l629306 series.
